I remember eating breakfast as my dad read the Sports Illustrated article about the first Ironman, and thinking “If you hit the wall at 20 miles of the marathon how in the world can you do this?” A few years later I watched Julie Moss crawl across the finish line at Ironman It took a number of years before I could get a bike and do my first multisport event. That was in 1989. I was in an out of the sport over the next 20+ years.
In 2014 I got serious about racing and got a training plan that I followed to the T. In the 24 weeks leading up to Ironman Maryland I missed six individual workouts. I went an hour and four minutes faster over basically the same course 10 years prior.
In March of 2018 after an 18-month hiatus from racing I got serious about my nutrition and dropped from 205 to my current weight of 169. 2018 saw some significant improvement in my racing times and finishing positions. 2019 saw dramatic improvements in training, and racing times, I was able to set PRs at every distance I raced, 5k to half marathon, sprint to half Ironman. The one thing that I thought was missing was my race nutrition. Over the years I have tried just about every liquid concoction out there. For a number of years, I used Infinit Mudd as a staple of my pre-race breakfast. So, in January as I was developing my plan for Ironman Louisville with a goal of a Kona slot, I contacted Infinit and developed my own special bike and run drinks. After one workout with each beverage, I realized I I was completely sold on Infinit, no hunger, no bloating, and my energy levels stay consistent.
When I first started out training I was on my own; I really had no significant support. I pieced together training from books and magazine articles. I believe that one of the key things to being an Infinit Ambassador is being supportive of other athletes. It is not much, but I started a Messenger Group last summer to offer training support to some of the women I swim with at Masters. Over the past three months it has turned from a triathlon support group to a triathlon support and mental wellness support group. I love the sport of triathlon, and this is one of the ways that I can give back.
