On Saturday June 5th, 2021 around 7am, my buddy Jeremy gave me a call and told me he had signed up for Kona 70.3 for the next year. Half asleep (and, probably still feeling buzzed from the night before), I agreed to sign up with him. I had watched him compete in the prior full Ironman in Tulsa, and watching that experience made me decide to say "yes, I'm in".
That morning, I was the most out of shape I had ever been in my life, weight more than I ever had, never swam for anything more than fun, had never run more than a 5k, and didn't own a bike (I did have a Peloton).
With lock down depression in full force, that phone call and challenge was exactly the kick in the ass I needed. I started to focus on training, and the positives that come along with it, and did indeed finish Kona. All of 14 mins and some change under the wire, but I did it!
I look forward to the next challenge(s) along this journey.
